Solly Solomon is a British-New Zealand figurative painter and Academician of The South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts.
Artist Statement
I am interested in the relationship between trauma and creativity and how the former can influence the latter. The strive to express emotion through paint is a core theme throughout my practice.
The exploration of tension between realism and abstraction is something that I’m continuously seeking.
My background in theatre heavily inspires the aesthetic and costuming of my models, particularly in the use of the makeup and Elizabethan style ruffs. This has evolved to become symbolic of both a physical mask and costume as well as a metaphor for masking of emotions.
I have painted for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I had watercolour lessons with my Gran, which granted me a privileged insight into the world of painting from a young age. Painting continues to be incredibly important to me because it makes me feel connected to her still, each day.
